Chocolate (Skim Milk)

  • 227 grams kremelta (white vegetable shortening)

  • 1 teacup icing sugar

  • 1 teacup skim milk powder

  • 1 dessert spoons cocoa powder

  • dash vanilla essence

  • grated rind of lemon, grapefruit, orange etc. (your preferred citrus)

Can I first just say how gorgeous is the recipe measurement “1 teacup”?

This recipe speaks of rationing, scrimping and making do within your means. Being alive through the fallout of two world wars (Nan was born just a few months before the end of WW1) will do that to a person.

Anyway, I promised I wouldn’t make this one of those websites with rambling anecdotes before you get to the actual recipe…

Melt kremelta over a low heat. Take off the heat, and sift in icing sugar, skim milk powder, and cocoa. Add vanilla and grated rind to taste.

Place into a buttered tin. Cut into squares when set.
