I’ve made the decision to relabel this recipe from its original name out of respect. I’m not sure why this recipe was originally named in such a way, but what I do know is that in the 1900’s when these recipes were transcribed into Nan’s book, racism in New Zealand towards Māori was rife. I think it’s best to err on the side of respectfulness.
113 grams butter
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons boiling water
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 dessert spoon cocoa
1/4 cup mixed dates, nuts, and raisins
Fruit and Nut Kisses (from Janet)
Beat butter and sugar with boiling water.
Add remaining ingredients and mix.
Spoon onto a lined baking tray and bake at 150°C for 20 minutes.
Once cooled, sandwich together with mock cream.
Mock cream is basically buttercream, made with butter, icing sugar, milk and vanilla essence. You could also just use whipped cream here, it would also be delicious, but mock cream is a bit thicker so would stand up more robustly to being squished together when you take a bite.
